What does it actually mean to ‘cook like an Auntie’?
It’s not a technique. It’s not a cuisine. And it’s definitely not something you’ll find written down in a neat, step-by-step recipe.
Cooking like an Auntie is a way of thinking.
It’s instinct over instruction. It’s feeding people properly, not impressing them. It’s knowing roughly what works, adjusting as you go, and trusting that it will come together in the end.
For most of us, it’s also how we learned to cook in the first place – standing in a kitchen, being told “just add a bit more of that” with absolutely no measurements in sight.
There are no strict rules (and that’s the point)
One of the reasons people find cooking intimidating is the idea that they need to get everything exactly right. Recipes reinforce that – precise quantities, exact timings, very little room for deviation.
Aunties don’t cook like that.
They adapt. They substitute. They use what’s in the fridge and adjust based on taste, not instructions. If something’s missing, it’s not a problem, it’s an opportunity to make it work differently.
That flexibility is what makes the food feel effortless, even when it isn’t.
You build flavour without overthinking it
A lot of the confidence comes from understanding a few simple building blocks.
You start with a base – usually something like onions, garlic, ginger – then layer in spices, then something to bring it together, like tomatoes or coconut milk. From there, you adjust.
Too sharp? Add something creamy.
Too flat? Add salt, chilli, or acid (like lemon juice).
Not quite there? Give it a bit more time in the pan.
Where paneer fits into this
Paneer is one of those ingredients that makes this style of cooking much easier.
It’s quick to cook, high in protein, and doesn’t require much preparation. You can fry it, grill it, crumble it, or throw it into whatever you’re making, and it will hold its own without needing too much attention.
Because it absorbs flavour so well, it works within this “adjust as you go” approach.
Our Original Paneer gives you the most flexibility if you want to build flavour yourself. If you’d rather start with something that already has a bit more going on, our Cumin, Chilli & Turmeric flavoured paneer offers a perfect solution.
This is how we’ve always cooked
For us, this isn’t a new idea. Three generations of our family have lived outside of India, and the way we cook has always evolved with that. Ingredients change, routines change, but the approach stays the same — cook instinctively, feed people well, and don’t overcomplicate it.
That’s where All The Aunties comes from. It’s not about recreating something exactly as it was, it’s about carrying that mindset forward into how people cook today.
Next time you’re cooking, loosen your grip on the recipe slightly. Taste as you go. Adjust things. Use what you have. If something feels like it’s missing, trust your instinct and add it.
Start simple – fry some paneer, add a few spices, build from there. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to work. Over time, that confidence builds naturally.
